Locations, Buildings & Heritage
Do you want to find out more about the history of our church buildings and the communities they served?
Perhaps you are researching your family history and are keen to find out about our Churchyards?
Or are you just planning a visit to the area?
The settlements across our benefice have distinctly different but particularly rich and interesting histories.
Bywell
St Peter's Bywell traces its origins to the Saxon period and a flourishing religious community and economically significant village at Bywell. It is perhaps the only hamlet in England with two adjacent, remaining Saxon churches.
St John’s Church was completed in the 1920s, a chapel of ease for the convenience of the expanded twentieth century population of Stocksfield, south of the river Tyne but still within the bounds of Bywell parish.
Hindley village lies within Bywell parish. It's former church, St Margaret's, is now a private home, but the churchyard remains in use.
Mickley
St George's is a 19th century built originally as a chapel to serve the growing mining community of Mickley Square.
There are Commonwealth War Graves in all three churchyards. Civic war memorials are located in St George's Church (Mickley & Hedley) and on the main road of Stocksfield (for Bywell and Stocksfield). Information on the names on Stocksfield and Mickley War Memorials can be found by contacting Stocksfield Local History Society.
St Peter’s is open from 10am to 3pm Tuesday to Sunday. Closed Monday.
St John’s is open every day from 9am to dusk.
St George's is open at service times and by arrangement.
Maintaining these buildings is a heavy responsibility for a small church congregation. If you have taken pleasure from your visit or learned something. Or even if you are just supportive of our efforts, we do appreciate and are grateful for financial donations to help in this task and would encourage you to make any donation through the Parish Giving Scheme, with which we are registered.
