Our Heritage
Do you want to find out more about the history of our Churches? Are you just planning a visit? Perhaps you are researching your family history and are keen to find out about our Churchyards. Perhaps you want to follow the Saxon Trail from Corbridge to Ovingham.
For more information about Bywell St Peter’s (and also St Andrew’s at Bywell) and St Peter’s Churchyard, Bywell Village, Stocksfield St John, Mickley St George’s and its Churchyard and the current Bywell parish Churchyard behind the former church of St Margaret’s, Hindley please follow the links below.
St Peter’s and St Andrew’s were initially built as Saxon Churches and signs of the original building can be seen in the stonework. St George’s is largely 19th century while St John’s was completed in the 1920s.
There are Commonwealth War Graves in all three churchyards and further information on the names on Stocksfield and Mickley War Memorials can be found by contacting Stocksfield Local History Society.
